Wedding Apocalypse

Concurrently planning for a wedding and the impending Zombie Apocalypse
Engagement Photos: We have a location! Alexis and I went to FINO (one of our favorite restaurants) last night to ask if we could take our engagement photos there. The manager was really nice, told us “congratulations” like 10 times, and said YES!  We need to coordinate with the restaurant and our photographer, but hopefully we can arrange something in the next couple of weeks. The space is really beautiful (designed by local firms Michael Hsu and Dick Clark Architecture) with a fabulous wood and glass screen that will make a great backdrop to the photos. FINO is also on the second floor of an office park and has an awesome view of the surrounding tree-dense neighborhood. Alexis and I have spent many special occasions together at FINO (birthdays, several anniversaries, celebrating new jobs and a buying a house) and it is exciting to be able to take our photos there. Wedding Cake! We can check something else off the wedding to-do list! We had a meeting (okay, we got together for some beers and talked about wedding stuff among other things) with Katy Cupcake and she will be making our wedding cake. Katy is an old friend I haven’t seen in a while and I love that having her bake our cake is also an awesome excuse to reconnect! Katy is a badass! We don’t plan on having bloody, zombified cake at the wedding, but I thought these cupcakes of hers are too awesome not to share.

Dress for Engagement Photos Last week, Alexis and I were on the patio at Dolce Vita having a drink and discussing how we really need to get organized and set up our engagement photo shoot. As we were having his conversation, our wedding photographer rode up right next to us on his bike! I think it is a sign! We have been so busy the past few months it has been hard to plan for the shoot. I have also been feeling a bit insecure recently and had a heck of a hard time finding a dress that fit and that I liked. I finally ordered a dress online and it is currently being altered. I’m picking it up on Saturday and I am really excited. I don’t look exactly like the model in the dress but I like it and Alexis got really excited when I put it on for the first time.

Weaponry Wednesday: Preparation is the Best Defense I try to profile a different potential anti-zombie weapon each Wednesday. I did not have time to try out the propane torch today (don’t worry - next week!) so I thought I would mention Max Brooks’ Zombie Survival Guide.  The guide contains a chapter devoted specific to weapons and gave me several ideas about what I would like to feature on Weaponry Wednesdays, though I’m not sure if I will be able to get my hands on machine guns, flame throwers or chemical weapons… Most importantly, the Zombie Survival Guide includes information on basic survival skills and practical ways to defend yourself against zombie attack. Being well prepared for the Zombie Apocalypse is the best weapon any of us can have.

Honeymoon! So we haven’t worked out major details like finalizing a guest list, taking engagement photos, printing save the dates or invitations, but…I’m so ready to plan the honeymoon! We are going to Palm Springs and just booked our room at The Horizon Hotel. If the zombie apocalypse comes while we are on are honeymoon, it is likely that we will be munched on by queer zombies. Palm Springs is apparently over 40% gay! The Horizon Hotel’s list of nearby bars and restaurants describes several of them as “hetero-friendly.”  :)

Alexis and I went to a firing range and I shot a rifle and a Glock 22. My aim was decent at a relatively close range but I had a lot of problems with the mechanics of the weapons: loading, turning the safety off, etc. An attacking zombie’s slow gait will probably afford me enough time to troubleshoot mechanical issues, aim and fire. People talk about the “rush” of firing a gun. I didn’t experience this at all. I felt awkward and kind of depressed the whole time we were at the range and for awhile afterwards. I hated not being able to communicate with Alexis due to the protective ear-wear and I was appalled by how little instruction a first-time shooter is given by the firing range staff.  I am glad to have the experience, but I have no intention of firing a gun again…until the apocalypse.
